Coal Creek offers unique experiential learning environment. Set at the time of Federation, the village depicts how life would have been for the early settlers in the region. Situated on the site of the original Coal Creek Coal Mine, Coal Creek shows just how the 'Black Gold' of Gippsland influenced the areas development.

Whether you choose one of our carefully designed sessions or prefer some thing more tailor made, our education team can assist in ensuring all your requirement are met.

Education Programs 2011

Going to School in 1901

Prep to Year 2
Take part in a school lesson in the old Jeetho School House and compare school life between now and 1901. Experience the “The Three R’s’ and use Slate and Slate pens. Selected students get to dress up in period costume.

Years 3 to 6
Students discover the routine of school life in 1901 beginning with a salute to the flag.
While comparing their school lives with that of 1901, they get to try out nibbed pen and ink and explore key issues such as Federation and the National Flag.


Life in an Early
Settlement Town

Take a tour of the village and understand what life was like for Early Settlers in the area. Tour themes can be designed to meet your educational needs, for example “old vs. new’.

Coal! The Black Gold
of Gippsland


Discover how Coal is formed by taking a tour of the site. Learn about the conditions faced by miners by visiting the mine entrance and mining museum.

Sustainability:
A thing of the past!!!

What can we learn about sustainable living from the early settlers? Explore the village to discover if life back then was more sustainable than it is now.


Pioneer Timber Skills
Learn the skills of the early settlers to build their homes by watching a demonstration of Broad axes and “Bush Skills’.

Old Fashion Craft
With no electricity how did children in 1901 spend their free time? Students answer this question while experiencing the hands on activities such as making peg dolls.

Bush Cooking
Gather around the fire and create “tucker” as the pioneers did. Make damper and drink billy tea.


Picnic Games
Students play a selection of games from the 19th Century such as sack races, marbles and quoits. What a difference to the games of today?

Spinning Demonstrations|
Join our local spinners to learn the process that take place in the art of spinning.

Bush Tram Ride
Jump aboard the open carriages of our diesel tram as it meanders through our bushland.

Special Educational needs

Coal Creek provides excellent opportunities for students with physical and learning disabilities. we have a teacher of the deaf avaiable to sign if required. Many of our programs are suitable for LOTE students.

Facilities

Groups are advised to bring a packed lunch and a drink.

Schools have the use of the restored railway carriage and station platform to sit and eat lunch.
